Father’s Day With Out My Father

This Sunday will be the 29th Father’s Day without my dad. He passed away in August 1988.

It seems like yesterday he was here , yet it also seems like an eternity.

Thus begging the tricky question of what to do on Father’s Day when you no longer have a father.

For some, I imagine that Father’s Day without a father is a reminder of the giant gaping hole in your life.

The display of Hallmark cards, the loads of emails of spam sales ads “Give Dad What He Really Wants!” and the heartrending TV ads of dads as our first loves and our heroes all feel like salt on wounds that have not healed, but have just been bandaged over.

My father might not be here physically, but that doesn’t mean I can’t celebrate the things that made him an amazing father; an amazing man. A great man.

When I was little, he told me I could be anything I wanted to be. And he meant it. When I was a teenager, he said you can be mouthy but I trust you Deb , you have a good head in your shoulders.

And he really meant it.

When I was struggling or lost, going through hell in my first marriage,he told me I already had all the answers, and to always pray about any major decisions . And he meant it.

I WILL CELEBRATE THE FATHER HE WAS, TO ME AND TO THE COUNTLESS OTHERS HE MENTORED AND GUIDED, BY LISTENING, BY LAUGHING, BY HUGGING, BY SAYING I LOVE YOU A HUNDRED TIMES A DAY. BY BEING PRESENT IN OUR LIFE.

He worked a ton of hours and wasn’t always there  because he worked 2 jobs.  But he was always present when I had a play, dinner, and us time, or he took me and my friends all over town skating, football games, baseball ,basketball no matter how tired he was. My mom didn’t drive.

We’d have father daughter day or night. We’d go to a YSU basketball game and he was happy spending time with his family.

Even after one of many open heart surgeries he still was a good , kind happy man.

He was a dad you could count on. My friends counted on him as well. Because some had drunken fathers, fathers to busy to be dad, or no father at all..

He was a giving man, he would help the poor, the sick, help anyone in family or a total stranger and I am proud I am like him in many ways.

He was a great grandfather to my daughter as well.  I mean Words just cant say how wonderful he was. She was the apple of his eye. His only grandchild.

He wasn’t rich , but I never wanted for anything. He made sure I had material things and most of all ,his love.

When he was going for cancer surgery on August 4 1988 the night before he wrote my mother a letter , and me a letter and my daughter a letter.  He always wanted us to know how much he loved us and how proud he was of us.

I was truly blessed to have such a great father.

I love him and I miss him everyday.

My ancestors founded Youngstown Ohio and it was cool to learn that it was last nights final puzzle.

What Happened to Youngstown Township?

The Mahoning Valley is part of a tract of land that once belonged to the state of Connecticut. Connecticut’s Western Reserve was bordered north and south by Lake Erie and the forty-first parallel, and extended 120 miles westward from Pennsylvania. In 1795, Connecticut sold a portion of the Reserve to a group of speculators known as the Connecticut Land Company.

The company surveyed the land, marking several townships of twenty-five square miles to sell to individuals who would in turn subdivide the townships into smaller parcels for sale.

In 1796, John Young of Whitestown, New York, set out to view the land for himself before making a purchase. In February of 1797, Young visited Connecticut and purchased from the Connecticut Land Company Township Two in the Second Range of the Western Reserve. The sale was finalized on April 9, 1800.The first Court of Common Pleas and General Quarter Sessions was held at Warren on August 25, 1800. During that session, the Court divided Trumbull County into civil townships. The governmental township of Youngstown (not the same as the 5 miles squared township) comprised most of what is now Mahoning County and included the townships of Poland, Coitsville, Hubbard, Liberty, Youngstown, Boardman, Canfield, Austintown, Jackson and Ellsworth.

Youngstown Township ceased to exist on November 17, 1913 when its remaining area was annexed by the City of Youngstown. Parts of Boardman, Liberty and Coitsville Townships were also affected in 1929-1930 when the City of Youngstown added to its incorporated area through additional annexations.

John Young (March 8, 1764 – 1825) was an American surveyor and pioneer. He is best known as the founder of Youngstown, Ohio, a village that eventually became one of the nation’s largest steel producers

 

Starting near the west end of the Spring Common (Peanut) Bridge near the B&O Railroad Station just west of downtown Youngstown and extending all the way to Fellows Riverside Gardens is the small, artsy, Youngstown neighborhood known as the Mahoning Commons.

 

Youngstown, not surprisingly, was named for New York native John Young, who surveyed the area in 1796. On February 9, 1797. Young purchased the township of 15,560 acres (6,300 ha) from the Western Reserve Land Company for $16,085. It was near this spot that in 1796, John Young founded Young’s Town.

 

By 1798, Youngstown was the home of several families who were concentrated near the point where Mill Creek meets the Mahoning River now known as the Mahoning Commons. The 1797 establishment of Youngstown was officially recorded on August 19, 1802. Although he never settled here permanently, two men in his party, James Hillman and Daniel Shehy did and have south side streets named after them.

 

The Mahoning Commons neighborhood grew up on the narrow flood plain on the south side of the Mahoning River. This neighborhood historically was a transportation and small industrial area with residential scattered throughout. It is the home of the City’s original water works, the historic B&O railroad station and the Western Reserve Transit Authority, located on the site of its predecessor, the Youngstown Transit Company.

 

Mahoning Commons was the site of Youngstown’s major flour processing entity, Baldwin’s Mill. Some of the mills foundation works and the waterfall that provided power to the mill still exist. There are several small industries and supply companies in the Commons as well as the old Isaly’s Dairy Company processing plant, now a U-Haul rental and storage facility,and the Ward Baking Company building, now home to small businesses and artist lofts.

Holidays seem to cause people more stress.

Maybe they are missing a loved one.

Maybe they are working and going to school.

Maybe they are trying to stretch their dollar to pay bills and find a way to buy gifts.

Maybe they already suffer from depression and holidays just add to that depression.

Maybe they suffer from alcohol or drug addiction or food addiction and all the parties whether it’s a work party family gathering often unfortunately includes alcohol and food and lately drugs.

Or all of the above.

It seems today so many people young and old lack good coping skills.

Learning how to cope properly can go a long way for your everyday health. Let’s face it Stress is a health killer.

And it can lead to addiction if your trying to “escape” all the stress and anxiety but medicating whether it’s by food, alcohol, drugs won’t help it will in fact make things worse .

Here, are some of the the best and worst ways to de-stress right now.

And don’t be afraid to reach out to someone and talk about it. A qualified professional counselor or pastor or social worker can help.

GET OUT OF YOUR HEAD

MY FAVORITE EXPRESS YOUR GRATITUDE

Studies have revealed the positive effects of expressing gratitude. While studying brain activity, National Institutes of Health researchers found subjects who showed more gratitude had higher levels of activity in the hypothalamus, a part of the brain that has a huge influence on our stress levels.

Plus, gratefulness also activated the regions associated with dopamine, one of those feel-good neurotransmitters. To reap these stress-reducing benefits, write down your feelings of gratitude daily in a journal, or by sending little notes to friends or family letting them know how much you appreciate them. I do try to tell my family I love you and I’m grateful every day.

EXERCISE

Exercise may be the healthiest stress buster : it revs your body’s production of feel-good endorphins, it can help regulate your sleep, lowers the symptoms associated with mild depression, boosts your energy, and helps you remain calmer and more focused, all of which can go a long way toward stress management. While it’s easy to let a daily exercise routine slide when you’re overwhelmed, take steps to incorporate it daily.

WORST THINGS YOU CAN DO : DRINKING, SMOKING, DRUGS AND OTHER VICES

Drowning your stress in a bottle of wine or a pack of cigarettes or a pill or a line might seem to bring a release in the moment, but turning to unhealthy vices like drinking, drugs, smoking, or even too much caffeine only sets you up to stress out more once the high wears off. And will lead to addiction and possibly death.

Since these habits tend to increase the Negative Impact stress is already having on your body (raising your blood pressure, making you jittery, moody, feeling lost, keeping you awake at night to name just a few), you enter into a vicious cycle of feeling more stressed out and then returning to the vice over and over.

DONT HIBERNATE

The thought of hiding away under the covers sounds pretty great when there’s so much to deal with beyond your bedroom door, but sleeping too much isn’t the answer. Studies show that the more you sleep, the more tired you actually feel.

Increased lethargy is only going to make it that much harder for you to focus and much less likely to deal with the stressors at hand.

Plus, studies that have shown an association between chronic oversleeping and diabetes, heart disease, weight gain, and even higher rates of death (though it’s unclear if too much sleep causes these problems).

Adding health problems to your already heavy load is only going to exacerbate your stress levels.

DONT DWELL ON THE NEGATIVE

If you make a mistake at work, or school or home do you assume you’re going to get fired? Do you think you’re going to fail?

Have a fight with your spouse or significant other and worry the relationship may be over?

It’s not uncommon to jump to worst-case scenarios when dealing with an upsetting issue, but blowing things out of proportion only intensifies your stressed. When we’re feeling stressed it’s very easy to view ourselves in a negative light, . Way to soften your inner chatter, goes to negative focus on positive I suggest looking at things from a different perspective. Talk to yourself as if you were offering advice to your best friend and odds are you’ll have much more compassionate and positive things to say.

DONT EAT YOUR FEELINGS

Like alcohol or drugs, food often becomes a crutch when coping with difficult times. I’ve been guilty of this.

Soothing your pain with a high-calorie, high-sugar, or high-fat comfort foods feels good at first, but it can quickly spiral out of control when your mind and body begin to associate negative emotions with eating.

At the first sign of stress, anger, or sadness you’ll instinctively reach for food rather than dealing with the feelings at hand.

Overeating can cause weight gain and make you feel worse about yourself.

DONT IGNORE THE PROBLEM

While it’s normal to take a mental time out once in a while to watch a funny movie or meet a friend for lunch, consistently avoiding the stress in your life is counterproductive.

When you evade your problems, you don’t allow yourself to process or understand what you’re dealing with.

The more you ignore something whether it’s a concrete problem like paying off bills or an emotional one like the fear of losing a job the greater it’s going to get.

Your best bet is to reach out for help and make a plan of action that will eventually diminish your problems and alleviate your stress.

Talk to a counselor , a pastor, a family member.

There is nothing to be ashamed of or embarrassed by in asking for help. We don’t judge you.

We are humans and we make mistakes and we get stressed and we feel stuck sometimes.

But we’re not stuck.

Please reach out to a professional if you feel the stress in your life is overwhelming.

And if no one has said it to you today.

Your a wonderful person who is going through a hard time. You can and will get through this. Believe in yourself. Like I believe in you.

Life

Life doesn’t always introduce you to the people you want to meet.

Sometimes life puts you in touch with the people you need to meet ,to help you, to hurt you, to leave you, to love you, and to gradually strengthen you into the person you were meant to become.

Say to yourself, regardless of whatever it is that you are facing, I will be all right.

Create an atmosphere of good positive that is about peace, healing and hope around yourself.

Get rid of people who bring you down, want to see you fail, or make you question your beliefs.

Whatever it is you are facing unexpected challenges, health problems, loss of a loved one, anxiety and stress, say to yourself.

I am going to be ok. Calm your mind, speak to your body, rest your spirit and relax you mind.

God will not allow you to fail.

‘Nothing Is Useless’

A Story of Hope and Encouragement 

In my third year battling discouragement and depression caused by limited mobility and chronic pain, I confided to a friend, “My body’s falling apart. I feel like I have nothing of value to offer God or anyone else.”
Her hand rested on mine. “Would you say it doesn’t make a difference when I greet you with a smile or listen to you? Would you tell me it’s worthless when I pray for you or offer a kind word?”
Do what you can with what you have and leave the results to God. I settled into my recliner. “Of course not.”
She frowned. “Then why are you telling yourself those lies? You do all those things for me and for others.”
I thanked God for reminding me that nothing we do for Him is useless.
In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul assures us that our bodies may be weak now but they will be “raised in power” (v. 43). Because God promises we’ll be resurrected through Christ, we can trust Him to use every offering, every small effort done for Him, to make a difference in His kingdom (v. 58).
Even when we’re physically limited, a smile, a word of encouragement, a prayer, or a display of faith during our trial can be used to minister to the diverse and interdependent body of Christ. When we serve the Lord, no job or act of love is too menial to matter.
Jesus, thank You for valuing us and using us to build up others.
Do what you can with what you have and leave the results to God.

I Love History and I Did Ancestry DNA

I love history and I have been researching both sides of my family tree. 
I found some interesting information from my fathers side. 

Some information I have found. And I cannot wait to see what else I uncover.

I may start a geneology blog so I can keep all that information in one area.

Is it time that I put my family history research on a blog of its own? Maybe.  
I been doing research for months and in some areas years and I have a lot of wonderful information I’d like to share. 
And  a place to record my  research progress and keep better track of what I’m working on? So I will start a  new blog to get organized, share my  research with family, or bring it to fellow researchers across the world?

A story. We all have a story…..

Antun Mihanović (10 June 1796 – 14 November 1861) was a notable Croatian poet and lyricist, most famous for writing the national anthem of Croatia, which was put to music by Josif Runjanin and adopted in 1891. Klanjec, his birthplace, holds a monument to him and a gallery of his works.
Mihanović studied law and worked as a military judge. After engaging in diplomacy, he was the Austrian consul in Belgrade, Thessaloniki, Smyrna, Istanbul and Bucharest. He retired in 1858 as a minister counselor, and lived in Novi Dvori until his death.
The poem which would become the Croatian anthem was Horvatska domovina. It was first published in the cultural magazine Danica ilirska, No. 10, edited by Ljudevit Gaj, in 1835. The anthem itself would become known as Lijepa naša (Our Beautiful), since those are the first two words of the poem.

Mihanović also wrote a small but important book, Rěč domovini o hasnovitosti pisanja vu domorodnom jeziku (A Word to the Homeland about the Benefits from Writing in Mother Tongue), published in Vienna in 1815. The ideas in this book became one of the foundations of the Illyrian Movement.

His Sister  Marija Justina Veronika Mihanović married a great great great uncle of mine Josip Brigljevic . 

Maria Mihanovich was the youngest sister of Antun Mihanovich who wrote the lyrics for Croatian national anthem “Lijepa naša domovino”. No other siblings had survived other than two of them. She married a lawyer Joseph Brigljevich Kurilovečki (de Kurilovec). 

He was from a rich family of lawyers originating from Kurilovec-Velika Gorica area, but living in Zagreb. I was not able to find a specific connection to Brigleviches living in Velika Gorica. 

Joseph’s parents had three sons christened with name Joseph. The youngest one was christened in year 1810. I am assuming that the first two sons named Joseph did not survive, and that the third Joseph is the husband of Maria. It is interesting that the youngest Joseph was born after his father’s death and initially declared illegitimate. That decision was reversed. 

Joseph Brigljevich was a successful lawyer, until he ended up on the wrong side of the history. In 1848 there was a culmination of a conflict between between two Croatian parties, one supporting the union with Hungary and the other with Austria. He was supporting the loosing side (supporting the union with Hungarians), against the future ban of Croatia Josip Jelachich. 

Joseph Brigljevich tried to run, but was caught and put in prison, but eventually released folowing an intervention of his brother-in-law Antun Mihanovich, who was supporting the winning side. 

Antun Mihanovich has spent his last days living in the manor owned by Joseph (maybe as a pay off for saving his life). That manor is now called dvor Mihanović in honor of his most famous inhabitant.

I have Avascular Necrosis/ Osteonecrosis and the condition/disease is rare, so rare there was no cause ribbon for anyone to identify with. 

I created a few varieties and now the AVN community finally has a ribbon. 

My goal is to educate and provide hope and support to anyone suffering from this condition.
Mine was caused by trauma to the knee (medial meniscus tear) in 2014. 

So what is Avascular Necrosis? 

Avascular necrosis (AVN), also called osteonecrosis, aseptic necrosis, or ischemic bone necrosis, is a condition that occurs when there is loss of blood to the bone. Because bone is living tissue that requires blood, an interruption to the blood supply causes bone to die. If not stopped, this process eventually causes the bone to collapse.
Avascular necrosis most commonly occurs in the hip. Other common sites are the shoulder, knees, shoulder, and ankles. But AVN can attack any bone or joint anytime and age is not a factor 

Who Gets Avascular Necrosis and What Causes It?
As many as 20,000 people develop AVN each year. Most are between ages 20 and 50.  But young children are also affected it’s called Leg Calves Perthes 

For healthy people, the risk of AVN is smaller than someone with an underlying cause.  

Most cases are the result of an underlying health problem or injury. Possible causes include:

Dislocation or fracture of the thigh bone (femur). Tear in meniscus, tear in shoulder, etc…

This type of injury can affect the blood supply to the bone, leading to trauma-related avascular necrosis. AVN may develop in 20% or more of people who dislocate a hip.

Chronic corticosteroid use. Long-term use of these inflammation-fighting drugs, either orally or intravenously, is associated with 35% of all cases of nontraumatic AVN. 

Although the reason for this is not completely understood, doctors suspect these drugs may interfere with the body’s ability to break down fatty substances. These substances collect in the blood vessels making them narrower  and reduce the amount of blood to the bone.

Excessive alcohol use. Much like corticosteroids, excessive alcohol may cause fatty substances to build in the blood vessels and decrease the blood supply to the bones.
Blood clots, inflammation, and damage to the arteries. All of these can block blood flow to the bones.
Other conditions associated with nontraumatic AVN include:
Gaucher’s disease, an inherited metabolic disorder in which harmful quantities of a fatty substance accumulate in the organs

Sickle cell disease

Pancreatitis, inflammation of the pancreas

HIV infection

Radiation therapy or chemotherapy

Autoimmune diseases

Decompression sickness, a condition that occurs when the body is subjected to a sudden reduction in surrounding pressure, causing the formation of gas bubbles in the blood

Symptoms of Avascular Necrosis

In its early stages, AVN typically cause no symptoms; however, as the disease progresses it becomes painful. At first, you may experience pain when you put pressure on the affected bone. Then, pain may become more constant. If the disease progresses and the bone and surrounding joint collapse, you may experience severe pain that interferes with your ability to use your joint. The time between the first symptoms and collapse of the bone may range from several months to more than a year.
Treatment for Avascular Necrosis
The goals of treatment for AVN are to improve or ensure function of the affected joint, stop the progression of bone damage, and reduce pain.
The best treatment will depend on a number of factors, including:
Your age

Stage of the disease

Location and amount of bone damage

Cause of AVN

If the cause of your avascular necrosis is identified, treatment will include efforts to manage the underlying condition. For example, if AVN is caused by blood clots, your doctor will prescribe medications to dissolve clots. If inflammation of the arteries is responsible, your doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatory medicines.
If avascular necrosis is caught early, treatment may involve taking medications to relieve pain or limiting the use of the affected area. If your hip, knee, or ankle is affected, crutches may be necessary to take weight off the damaged joint. Your doctor may also recommend range-of-motion exercises to help keep the affected joint mobile.
While these nonsurgical treatments may slow the progression of avascular necrosis, most people with the condition eventually need surgery.
Surgical options include:
Bone grafts, which involve removing healthy bone from one part of the body and using it to replace the damaged bone

Osteotomy, a procedure that involves cutting the bone and changing its alignment to relieve stress on the bone or joint

Total joint replacement, which involves removing the damaged joint and replacing it with a synthetic joint

Core decompression, a procedure that involves removing part of the inside of the bone to relieve pressure and allow new blood vessels to form

Vascularized bone graft, a procedure that uses the patient’s own tissue to rebuild diseased or damaged hip joints; the surgeon first removes the bone with the poor blood supply from the hip and then replaces it with the blood-vessel-rich bone from another site, such as the fibula, the smaller bone located in the lower leg.
